Discover Hiway Pizza Pub

Walking into Hiway Pizza Pub feels like stepping into a familiar neighborhood hangout where the staff already knows what you’re thinking about ordering. Located at 1301 W College Ave, State College, PA 16801, United States, this diner-style pizza pub has built its reputation on comfort food done right and a laid-back atmosphere that works just as well for a quick lunch as it does for a long night out with friends.

I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a Penn State game or a late evening when nothing but pizza and wings will do. One thing that stands out every time is consistency. Whether it’s a packed Friday night or a quiet weekday afternoon, the menu delivers the same familiar flavors. The dough has that slightly chewy bite that pizza lovers look for, and the sauce balances sweetness and acidity without overpowering the cheese. According to data shared by the National Restaurant Association, pizza remains one of the top five most-ordered restaurant foods in the U.S., and places like this prove why it never goes out of style.

The menu covers more than just pizza, which is where this spot really shines as a pub-style diner. Alongside classic and specialty pies, you’ll find subs, burgers, salads, and appetizers that actually feel thought through instead of tacked on. I once watched a group of students split an order of wings, a loaded cheesesteak, and a large pie, and every plate came back clean. The kitchen workflow is efficient too. Orders move quickly from counter to oven, and you can see the staff coordinating in a way that suggests real experience rather than guesswork.

What makes the food work is a straightforward process that focuses on freshness and repetition. Dough is prepped daily, toppings are portioned consistently, and pizzas are baked at high heat to get that crisp finish. Culinary researchers often note that repeatable processes are key to maintaining quality in high-volume restaurants, and this place is a textbook example of that idea put into practice. It’s not flashy, but it’s reliable, and reliability matters when you’re feeding a crowd.

Reviews from locals and visitors alike often mention the welcoming vibe. That tracks with my own experience. On one visit, a staff member noticed a first-time customer struggling to choose and casually suggested one of the house favorites, explaining why it’s popular. That kind of interaction builds trust. While no restaurant is perfect, and wait times can stretch during peak hours, the team is usually upfront about delays, which helps manage expectations.

As a location, it’s hard to beat. Being right on College Avenue makes it an easy stop whether you’re walking from campus or driving in from another part of State College. Parking can be tight, but that’s a common trade-off for central locations like this. The pub-style seating encourages conversation, and the TVs make it a natural spot for watching games without feeling like a loud sports bar.

From an industry standpoint, independent pizza pubs like this play a big role in local food economies. Food service analysts frequently point out that neighborhood restaurants help anchor communities by offering affordable meals and casual gathering spaces. This spot fits that role comfortably. It’s not trying to reinvent pizza or upscale diner food; instead, it focuses on doing familiar things well.

If there’s a limitation worth noting, it’s that the menu sticks close to traditional offerings. Adventurous eaters looking for experimental flavors might find it a bit safe. Still, for most people, that’s part of the appeal. When you order here, you know what you’re getting, and more often than not, it hits the spot in exactly the way you hoped it would.

  • Hiway Pizza is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. I love their Buffalo Chicken pizza. It comes with the best blue cheese dressing I’ve ever had. They make their own sauce! The atmosphere is nice too! They’re playing the song “Dangerous” by Joywave, which is fantastic. Love this place!

  • I ordered the Detroit which is a six slice, 10" x 14", deep dish pizza. As you can see they put the sauce on top of the cheese in two strips. The pizza was done perfectly! I loved the crisp outer crust and the soft, chewy inside of it. There was plenty of cheese and, though I wasn't sure about how they put on the sauce, I had no problem with it and loved the taste of the whole pizza! This is not a place where you can go in and get a slice, but a nice dining experience. I could do without all the TVs but the place was clean and well kept. I would totally go back and hope I can bring my family the next time I'm in State College!

  • Ordered delivery. Sicilian pizza. The crust was excellent. The Italian sausage was not good. I also thing that $37.94 (including tip and delivery fee) is pretty steep.

  • Service is ultra slow today. Place is too packed. I came in for seconds tonight. Mr. White pizza. After my last Google review the parking lot is full. Inside, outside packed. Nice manifestation. Excellent food. Excellent service. I enjoyed the Butcher pizza. Thank you animal Spirits and Gary for creating it. Met the lovely grand daughter of the owners. Highly recommended eatery when you are in State College, PA. Enjoy the Penn State football games and delicious eats here.

  • HiWay Pizza's pizza is my new favorite! We couldn't decide between the Sicilian and the Detroit, so we ordered both. The Detroit pizza was the favorite! The restaurant is nice and our service was great. We went there on a Thursday around 5:30 pm, and it was getting busy pretty quickly. They also have a very large selection of beer on tap.

  • Went here with some coworkers while at State College. Atmosphere was your normal college sports town bar. Service was good (nothing out of the ordinary). My salad was good portion nowadays (balsamic was good), and the pasta bowl was slightly smaller than average portion size. My coworkers liked their pizza and said it was good crust.

  • We had a couple of elderly family members with us and the staff couldn't have been nicer. They set up the tables for us and made things convenient. Theresa was awesome Very friendly and the food was great!
